Developing a Pencil Grip
It is important for children to develop a mature, efficient and correct pencil grasp by going through the developmentally appropriate stages of various pencil grasps. Handwriting difficulties could be avoided in later years if there is an early emphasis on strong fine motor skills, learning how to hold a pencil and regular practice on how to use it.
It is very important to address pencil grip early, because if it is not corrected, it can later affect speed and legibility.
This document shows developmentally appropriate stages of various pencil grasps and activity ideas and suggestions for that stage of development.
